Anyone who’s perused this site knows I love Egyptian movie posters, and this one I’m particularly bananas over. And I’m not even that big a fan of ‘giant monkey’ films!
Though the title “Son of King Kong” is listed both in English and Arabic, this is merely a case of ‘bait and switch’ Kongsploitation. It’s really the 1998 Disney remake of Mighty Joe Young, starring Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron. I’m sure the film is a modern CGI effects-laden extravaganza, but I love the fact that the poster art looks much older than it really is. What could have been just another mundane Photoshop montage (prominently featuring Ms. Theron) was eschewed in favor of wicked circus-style art, featuring bloodthirsty lions attacking a love-stricken ape.
P.S. Now I know why this poster has such a vintage quality to it – a large portion of the artwork was manually copied from the original 1949 U.S. one-sheet.
